About H.N. Leonard

H.N. Leonard is a Birmingham, Alabama attorney and urban fantasy author. She writes fiction about hidden magical worlds, dangerous secrets, supernatural politics, and the people whose lives change when the unseen stops staying hidden.

Based in Birmingham, Alabama, she practices employment law in Birmingham, Alabama, and writes adult urban fantasy shaped by mystery, legal and institutional pressure, Southern social dynamics, and the tension between the visible world and the dangerous one beneath it. Her work is interested in what power looks like when it hides inside respectable systems, and in what happens when ordinary lives collide with forces that refuse to stay buried.

Her completed manuscript, Bless Your Heart and Other Southern Curses, is an adult urban fantasy mystery set in Birmingham’s hidden magical community, where a trial lawyer and closeted witch must investigate a suspicious death before it sparks a larger war. She is also at work on The Hour Ledger, a darker urban fantasy centered on a secret Smithsonian archive and a sentient manuscript that decides what its reader is allowed to know.

Living and working in Birmingham informs both the setting and texture of her fiction, from the rhythms of Southern professional life to the tension between public respectability and private danger.

What I Write

I am drawn to stories about hidden systems, uneasy bargains, and the moment a person realizes the world is far stranger than they believed. I write urban fantasy because it lets the familiar world remain recognizable even as it opens into something uncanny, dangerous, and impossible to ignore.
