Most people think Birmingham, Alabama is called the Magic City because it sprang up overnight like magic during the steel boom. A select few know it sprang up overnight because of magic.
Hazel Matthews would prefer not to be one of those people.
A closeted witch living in the buckle of the Bible Belt, Hazel has built a perfectly respectable life as a trial lawyer while avoiding the supernatural world she was born into. In Birmingham’s hidden magical community, where witches, fae, and other supernatural refugees quietly coexist with humans, exposure can be deadly. The Mystikos, a secret society devoted to eliminating magic, have spent centuries hunting anyone foolish enough to reveal their power.
When Hazel’s ex-fiancé dies under suspicious circumstances, magical residue at the scene threatens to reignite a centuries-old conflict between the Mystikos and Birmingham’s supernatural diaspora. If the Mystikos conclude that magic killed him, retaliation could turn the Magic City into the next battlefield in their war against the supernatural.
Determined to prevent that outcome, Hazel begins investigating, and her search pulls her deeper into Birmingham’s hidden magical society, where she encounters uneasy alliances and dangerous supernatural politics. To stop a war and reveal the truth, she must do the one thing she has spent her entire life avoiding: use her magic publicly.

At the Smithsonian’s hidden Department of Anomalous Records and Restricted Holdings, a young archivist is assigned a strange manuscript that should have been handled like any other object. Instead, the book begins to reveal that it is alive, watchful, and far more interested in her than any ordinary artifact has a right to be. As the manuscript draws her deeper into a concealed supernatural world, she is forced to navigate dangerous power, old bargains, and truths that arrive only when the book decides she is ready to see them.
